Moving into a new rental property is exciting — and stressful if you are not prepared. This checklist helps ensure nothing is missed before, during, and after your move.
Before You Move In
- Sign your lease and keep a copy
- Pay security deposit and first month's rent — get receipts
- Conduct a thorough move-in walkthrough and document any pre-existing damage in writing with photos
- Confirm all appliances are working
- Set up utilities in your name: electricity, gas, water, internet
- Update your mailing address with USPS, bank, employer, etc.
Moving Day
- Photograph every room before bringing in your belongings
- Locate all circuit breakers, water shut-offs, and HVAC controls
- Test all door locks, windows, and smoke/CO detectors
- Get keys and parking passes as agreed in your lease
Within the First Week
- Report any unnoticed issues to your landlord in writing
- Review your renter's insurance options — highly recommended
- Introduce yourself to neighbors
- Locate the nearest laundry, grocery, and emergency services
